Pyrus communis 'Summercrisp'

Summercrisp is a new cold-hardy, early-season pear released by the University of Minnesota for our cold climate growers! Summercrisp grows where most pear cultivars survive poorly and often fail to fruit. This cultivar’s name comes from its early harvest season, firm texture, and the fact that, unlike most summer pears, the fruit is best consumed without having been ripened for several days after picking. Eating quality is highest while the flesh is firm and crisp; grit cells will appear if fruit is allowed over-ripen. The fruits themselves are showy chartreuse pears with a red blush on the sunny side; the tree bears in abundance in late summer.

Fruits are smaller, 3″-4″ generally, Early bloomer, bloom category 1. Produces lots of viable pollen, so an unusually good pollinizer for other early and mid-season bloomers. Shows very good resistance to fireblight.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 4

Mature Height:  15' (Semi Dwarf)

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: August/September

Pollination: Bloom Category 1 Early; Needs a Pollinizer from Bloom Category 1 or 2

Semi-Dwarf Rootstock: OHxF87
