This 8-inch long, aged wooden tool is a stunning example of the traditional Japanese ink line, or sumitsubo, with roots tracing back to ancient Egypt and China. As a significant spiritual symbol, it was once left in shrines or temples as a treasure. Today, it's given to master carpenters who often donate it to shrines. Functionally, it's used to mark wood for cutting, much like a Western chalk line. Its spacious well was designed to hold a wad of ink-soaked silk cotton. As the line is drawn, it picks up ink for marking. Years of use have worn away the edges of the opening.
